The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be building a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
