TikTok Provides Viewers Control to Reduce Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Timelines

Users will soon have a new feature that permits them to reduce the amount of AI-created media appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the platform revealed that it presently contains in excess of 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

The update is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a global launch. This development comes amid a rise in AI-generated material, driven by new video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that nearly one in 10 of the fastest-growing channels on a popular video site primarily display clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this output is considered low-quality AI content, a phrase for inferior, bulk-generated content that is often nonsensical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content made with AI tools, from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we want to offer the community the option to see more or less of that, according to their own choices,” stated a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok shared that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its service labeled as made with AI. Overall, more than 100 m videos are uploaded to the platform daily, making clips made by AI a minor percentage of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Viewers will be capable of limit or boost the volume of artificial media they see by accessing the topic control feature in the platform and selecting the AI content topic. Further subjects that can already be modified under the tool cover news, style, beauty, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its policies oblige users to tag convincing AI-made content, and it forbids harmful AI impersonations of public figures or crisis events. Any believable artificial content that is without a tag can be deleted under its community policies.

In addition, the service will now add an AI-generated watermark to content created with its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for identifying content made by AI. This step is aimed to help prevent users from attempting to evade the labeling process.

Responsible AI Funding

The platform is furthermore establishing a two million dollar AI literacy fund for professionals and institutions to create informative material about using AI responsibly. This program will support charitable organizations dedicated to teaching programming and robotics.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has supported its content review process, during discussion over plans to cut jobs for numerous safety staff in the United Kingdom. TikTok is planning to cut 439 jobs in its user protection team in its British office, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by automated systems.

A senior executive explained that human moderation would remain essential, but AI can shield workers by removing the most distressing content prior to it is viewed by humans. The company announced a notable drop in explicit and harmful content reviewed by safety staff over the last 12 months due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to combine people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we also think it’s very important to minimize viewing of dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is where a significant AI assistance is proving valuable operate efficiently.”
